Session Spotlight: Do You See What I See?

June 11, 2026

What if the signs were right in front of you?

As substance misuse trends continue to evolve, healthcare professionals are increasingly encountering situations where warning signs may be hidden in plain sight. Emerging substances, changing methods of concealment, and the use of everyday items to disguise drug use can make identification more challenging than ever. Recognizing these signs early can play a critical role in prevention, intervention, and patient safety.

At the 2026 Patient Safety Conference & Annual Forum, attendees will have the opportunity to explore this important topic during Do You See What I See?, presented by Lily Jones, Prevention Specialist for the SPF Rx Grant (Strategic Prevention Framework for Prescription Medication Misuse) with Employee and Family Resources

The "Do You See What I See" room is an interactive, educational demonstration often used by prevention programs to help parents and caregivers recognize possible signs of drug, alcohol, or other substance use in a teen’s environment. It’s based on the “Hidden in Plain Sight” concept, where common household items are arranged in a mock teen bedroom to represent ways substances can be hidden or disguised.

Purpose

The goal is awareness, not suspicion. The room is designed to:

  • Show how substance can be concealed in everyday items.
  • Encourage open, non-confrontational conversations with teens about substance use.
  • Help parents identify potential red flags early, which can lead to safer decision-making and reduce unsafe driving or addiction.

As substance misuse continues to impact communities across the country, awareness remains one of the most powerful tools for prevention. Do You See What I See? offers attendees practical knowledge, real-world perspective, and actionable strategies that can help strengthen patient safety efforts and support healthier communities.
